| It is taught in the Islamic tradition that the cosmos is manifested through the 99 Divine Names and Attributes (Asma wa Sifaat), which are comprised of the 29 letters of the Arabic alphabet, governing everything in creation from the sensory phenomenaโcolor, smell, taste, the cycles of the moon and stars, planets, and constellationsโto the sublime spiritual planes
This piece is in the shape of the lotus flower symbolizing the sun. The central circle followed by a star represents the moon which symbolizes Holy Prophet Muhammad (s) as the receiver and reflector of the Light (Nur) that shines from the Sun of the Divine Names and Attributes. The central circle also symbolizes our atomic reality of nothingness (0). The outermost circle, infused with arabesques, symbolizes Absolute Unity, the timeless whole, the unseen realm of absolute beauty that transcends time and space and every possible form outward or inward. As well, it symbolizes the infinite quality of Allahโs Magnificence: His known 99 Names and Attributes are really the mother of His infinite names and attributes. He is not contained by any description. His Greatness is unimaginable, infinite. The blue and green colors represent oceans; each Divine Name or Attribute is an Ocean. |
